It has been a crazy fall health wise for our family. We have all been on antibiotics for upper respiratory infections. Each of us has been (or will be going) to a specialist for one reason or another also. Argh. But my poor sweet baby. She has by far had it the worst of all of us!
September 7th--The dreaded cough begins.
September 8th--I am out of meds for the nebulizer, so call the doc to have a new prescription called in. Start treatments once a day.
September 12th--Head to the beach, nebulizer in tow.
September 23rd--Still coughing and has had a stuffy nose for about 2 weeks (the doc's cut off time before he thinks it is something other than a cold). Appt with float doc (our doc is on vacation. Can't blame him since we just got back from the beach.) She says no signs on infection. Tells us to start taking Zyrtec (she told us to take the maximum dose for LilE's age/weight).
October 1--Cough better, but not gone. Stuffy nose fixed.
October 9th--Head to Texas, but take since the cough is still lingering, take the neb just in case.
October 13--Cough worse, bump breathing treatments up to twice a day.
October 20th--Appt first thing with our doc. Says since this cough has been going on for 6 weeks we need to treat it aggressively. Obviously the allergy meds didn't knock it out and her lungs sound good. Start 20 days of Omnicef. Since she sounds clear, I stop breathing treatments. They didn't work and she isn't wheezing.
November 8th--Antibiotics complete. Guess what? The cough decided to stick around. And the past three weeks, LilE has not eaten. I worry, but remember that it is just a short period and she is on strong antibiotics.
November 9th--Call the doc again. Cough still here. Goodness gracious! He talks me through the last 9 weeks. Allergies treated, bacterial infection treated. Then he asks if she has had a history of wheezing. Yes, since she was 11 months old! I seriously busted out the stethescope just days before to see if she was wheezing and she was not. But at our appt she was wheezing! Praise the Lord for finding a cause for this cough!! She was started back on twice a day neb treatments (Pulmacort and Xopenex), started 5 days of steriods, started Singular, continue Zyrtec and Flonase. Holy moly--SIX meds! That is a lot for one kid!
November 12th--I have not heard a cough in 2 days! Praise the Lord!! But she still is not eating. I thought steroids made you eat everything in sight?
November 14th--Steroids complete. Still no signs of a cough!
November 17th--Cough free for a week!! And she's eating! For breakfast she had 3 biscuits. At lunch consumed 1 grilled cheese, 3/4th quesadilla, two handfulls of chips, and a fruit cup, followed by a fun size bag of peanut M&Ms. All for lunch. And for dinner eats half an enchilada, chips, and grapes. Seriously, I think she ate enough to make up for 4 weeks without eating!
We head back for a follow-up on November 30th to see about weaning some of the other meds off. But for now we continue spending snuggle time during neb treatments (40 minutes each) watching lots of Tarzan (on VHS mind you). She loves it!

Holy cow! It's nice to hear that someone else struggles with the cough. What a little trooper she is!!
UGH! 20 days of Omnicef...the smell alone sends my kids running in the opposite direction. Praying the rest of the winter will not be as eventful. LOVE YOU sounds like you guys need a night out..we are always here when you need a sitter! :)
My oldest was on the exact same medicines as E. Thankfully, he started allergy shots a couple of years ago, had his tonsils/adenoids removed, and is doing tons better! He doesn't take ANY medicine now, only when he needs it, which isn't very often. I know how hard that can be for everyone. Hope she finally kicks the cough and can cut out some of her meds. Take care!
Poor LilE!!! Hope the cough stays gone and her appetitie stays good. Gotta love the Texas girl menu - quesadilla and enchiladas in the same day - yummy!!!
I'm SO glad she's feeling better finally:)
