Did You Know?

That you can put foil in the microwave? I have been told all my life you can not. In my new Great American Cookout magazine/cookbook, I found a Marbled Brownie recipe. The picture makes them look so wonderful! Monday night was my night to bring treats to Bible Study. These brownies would be the sweet part of my treat. As I am reading, there is no direction stating to preheat the oven. What? Brownies and no oven. Didn't know it was possible. I am following the instructions, then I read "Shield corners of dish with triangles of foil." What? Foil in the microwave? Can't be. I re-read the directions more times than I can remember to make sure I didn't miss the 'preheat the oven' command! Well, they look good in the picture, so let's try it out. I was so precise in making sure the triangles of foil were placed just right. I looked under the sink to make sure the fire extingisher was full; it is. Then I reviewed P.A.S.S. to make sure I knew what to do WHEN the microwave caught on fire. (My yearly computer testing of fire safety came in to play.) Okay, here we go! Start. Nothing, Nothing...who knew! Eleven minutes later, still no fire! And what I did have was great Marble Brownies!

Enjoy!

Marble Brownies
Taste of Home

Brownie Layer:
5 TBSP butter
2 squares (1 oz each) unsweetened chocolate
2/3 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
2/3 cup flour
½ tsp baking powder

Cheesecake Layer:
1 pkg (8 oz) cream cheese
½ cup sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup (8 oz) chocolate chips

In a large microwave-safe bowl, combine the butter and chocolate. Cover and microwave on high for 1-2 minutes; stir until smooth. Beat in sugar, eggs, and vanilla. Add the flour and baking powder until blended. Spread into a greased microwave-safe 8-in square dish; set aside.

In a microwave-safe bowl, heat cream cheese on high for 45-60 seconds or until softened; stir until smooth. Beat in sugar, egg, and vanilla. Spoon over brownie batter; cut through batter with a knife to swirl. Sprinkle with the chocolate chips.

Shield corners of dish with triangles of foil. Place the dish on an inverted microwave-safe saucer. Cook, uncovered, at 70% power for 11-13 minutes* or until toothpick comes out clean, rotating a half turn after 5 minutes. Heat on high for 1 minute. Cool on a wire rack to cool completely. Store in the refrigerator.

Yield: 1 dozen

Editor’s note: Shielding with small pieces of foil prevents overcooking of food in the corners of a square or rectangular dish. Secure foil firmly to dish and do not allow it to touch insides of oven.

*This recipe was tested with an 850-watt microwave. Adjust times based on your own microwave oven.

What?!? I thought foil would melt the microwave or something else really bad. It still seems kinda fishy to me. Guess I'll just have to make the brownies myself and give it a try! (Good call on checking the fire extinguisher, though. I would have forgotten about that!)

They must have been good. You'll have to make them for me sometime. :) I never knew you could put foil in the microwave either. Hmmm.

Then WHY when I was maybe 11 years old and I put my hamburger from Wendy's still wrapped in its foil in my microwave that they whole things started sparking like crazy???

That's why I checked the fire extingisher!! I have had a fireworks show before too! I think it is the how you put the foil in the microwave. It can't touch ANYTHING but the dish. Or at least that is my speculation.
