Several months ago, a girl I work with said she took the bumper pad out of her daughters crib when she could stand up on her own because it gave her something to boost herself out of the crib. I did not do it at that time. Little E didn't have a clue what "to climb" meant, so I just used my parenting common sense and decided to watch her. The last 2-3 nights she has lifted her leg up and put it between the rails and the bumper. Last night I decided I would be proactive and go ahead and take it out so I didn't have to rush her to the ER after she outsmarted me and climbed out of the crib.
When Daddy and I went to bed last night she was making some noises in her room. Same as she did the night before, but we didn't worry about her the night before last. Last night Daddy said he was going to go check on her anyway. "What's the worst that could happen? She could scream for the next little while." So we chuckled and he went in. He almost immediately came back out and motioned for me to come in. What did I see? Her little legs were sticking out of the rails, past her knees and her eyes we wide open! She was making those mousy noises because she couldn't go to sleep! Daddy got her unstuck and she just snuggled with him. He brought her into our room and she laid down with us. She even fell asleep in our bed! (First time since she was itty bitty!) She turned over and then took up my spot, so when I went to rearrange her she woke up and sat up. So back to her crib, bumper reinserted, for a good night's sleep! Hope she doesn't climb out tonight...

poor little prisoner. i'm glad her bumper is back now to save her thighs from crib-mark.
i guess taking a picture was out of the question? j/k
hope mimi and pop(is that right) arrived safely!
GUILTY....I left the bumper in till W was out of the crib...he loved it and NEVER tried to climb out ...not once! So since he bumped his head into the corner of it to fall asleep I left it and he is fine...I know....I know another thing the "books" would send me to jail for but hey he is in a bed now and sleeps through the night..I must have done something right! BUMPERS RULE!
hey check out the times of our posts...weird....
I thought about taking a picture, but never mentioned it...and there won't be a next time. We were all about getting her unstuck.
I haven't removed Stone's bumper yet either, and he does like to climb other things. He hasn't figured out how to climb out of the crib yet, but has managed to put his leg all the way through the rails.. pretty funny actually! Like Will, he also crams his head into the corner or edge of the bumper to fall asleep, so it's staying as long as he's safe!!
We JUST removed Hannah's bumper and for several nights after, she also got her legs stuck in the railing or she woke up b/c she had hit the sit of the crib. One night, I felt like the worst mom ever b/c I had let her cry for 15 minutes before checking on her. We only took it out b/c she had been standing on it so much that it was tearing apart. I had also heard to take the bumper out, but no matter what books say, you know your kid the best!
Have a great weekend!
